United through Education (Familias Unidas) is Honored as a Welcoming Star!

Redwood City Together is thrilled to announce United through Education (Familias Unidas) as our 2022-2023 Organizational Welcoming Star!

Familias Unidas (United through Education) was established with the mission to build better communities by focusing on the education of the whole family. Since 2006, they have developed and refined family engagement classes, creating a platform that promotes a passion for learning and achievement. These classes encompass various educational disciplines to empower both parents and students and foster a sense of community engagement. Their comprehensive approach not only enhances the educational experiences of students but also equips parents with the confidence to contribute positively to the development of their families and the community as a whole.

As a representative of Familias Unidas, Kim Zuno remarked the following: “By nurturing a culture of education and engagement within families, we are sowing the seeds of positive change that will span generations. As parents and children alike develop a passion for learning, gain confidence, and actively participate in the community, a ripple effect will occur, leading to a more knowledgeable, empowered, and united community that collectively works towards continuous improvement.”

Anyone can volunteer their time to assist in Familias Unidas family engagement classes, workshops, or events. This direct interaction with families and students can have a significant impact on fostering a supportive learning environment. Welcoming Redwood City is the welcoming initiative of Redwood City Together that builds empathy, understanding, and supportive action to bridge social divides such as race, class, and immigration status. To honor local pioneers and programs which build an inclusive community, Redwood City Together gives two annual Welcoming Stars awards.
